Meet Apple's affordable computer for education - complete with a 17-inch flat CRT display, a PowerPC G4 processor, a SuperDrive option and a space-saving, all-in-one design that fits on school desks. Plus digital applications for learning and Mac OS X.
iLife. Suddenly, it all connects.
The iLife software application suite that comes on your new eMac, includes iTunes , iPhoto , iMovie and iDVD (SuperDrive-equipped model only). The apps let you and your students do fun, creative things with your pictures, music and movies - and share them with family and friends - in ways that PC users can only dream about. And whether you're creating your own music CDs, publishing your digital pictures online, editing digital video, or authoring DVDs, you can do all these things and more quite nicely without thumbing through a manual. It's all part of the iLife experience.
17-inch flat CRT display.
Great news for those of you who prefer the ruggedness and durability of a flat CRT display, yet wanted something larger: The eMac sports a 17-inch flat CRT display. The display offers nearly 40% more viewing area than a 15-inch CRT, so you'll have almost 40% more work space - perfect for viewing large images, and multiple web pages and documents. Since the screen is flat (with less image distortion than curved CRTs), there's less glare, making it easier on the eyes.
The eMac comes with five crisp screen resolutions - 640 by 480 pixels at 138 Hz,800 by 600 pixels at 112 Hz,1024 by 768 pixels at 89 Hz,1152 by 864 pixels at 80 Hz,and 1280 by 960 pixels at 72 Hz - making it perfect for the classroom. Setting the screen to a higher resolution means there is more workspace for students and teachers to study large documents, two-page spreads, websites and other projects without having to waste time scrolling down to see the rest of the document. Less scrolling means more time spent working and learning - a desirable outcome in an environment where every second counts.
Affordable G4 processing power
Educators clamored for affordable G4 processing power. Apple is making the same supercomputing power found in the Power Mac and new iMac available to educators by equipping the eMac with a blazingly fast 1GHz PowerPC G4 processor. This makes the eMac Apple's most affordable G4-based system.
The PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine is so fearsomely fast that its performance is measured in gigaflops, or billions of floating-point operations per second. The Velocity Engine uses the same 128-bit vector processing technology featured in scientific supercomputers - just what today's students need to accelerate intensive multimedia calculations, import audio files and create video transitions in iMovie. The bottom line is that the eMac's 800MHz G4 processor makes digital media creation faster - which in turn means that students can spend more time learning and less time waiting.
All-in-one design
Schools have told us they really like an all-in-one design because it saves space in classrooms and computer labs. The eMac gives you all that and more, besides being easy to set up, use and maintain. There aren't a lot of extra cords to connect monitors to computers, only one unit to keep track of (instead of having to inventory both a computer and monitor, not to mention separate speakers), and desktop clutter is kept to a minimum. The eMac is rugged like the 15-inch-CRT-based iMac, and sticky fingerprints wipe clean from the glass CRT display and from the body of the computer. Incidentally, the body is made of fire-retardant polycarbonate plastic, the same material used to manufacture bulletproof glass. So you can be sure that the eMac is strong enough for student use.
Small footprint, so it fits on desks
As an added bonus, the eMac design is about the same size as the 15-inch-CRT-based iMac - 8mm shorter, actually. We did this so schools can use the same tables and desks that are already in classrooms.
It's got the drive you need
The eMac now comes with your choice of the revolutionary SuperDrive or Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, in addition to the CD-RW drive. Students can store classroom projects on data CDs, and teachers can store multiple class projects on a DVD-R disk. Note that recordable CDs cost less than $0.90 each, and can hold 650 MB of information - the equivalent of more than 450 floppy disks - making them the smart solution for saving digital media projects, or sharing them with others. DVDs - the kind you can burn on your new SuperDrive-equipped eMac - can store a mind-boggling 4.7GB of data - the equivalent of 3200 floppy discs or 7 CD-R discs or CDs. DVD playback allows students to view multimedia content on DVD. eMacs equipped with the Combo drive are Apple's lowest-priced system to offer DVD playback.
Two computers in one
The eMac comes with Mac OS X , Apple's most powerful yet easy-to-use operating system. The first operating system designed for the 21st century, UNIX-based Mac OS X works with most of your existing network and peripherals, and fits perfectly into education environments. Today thousands of applications take full advantage of Mac OS X's power and versatility, including the critically acclaimed Microsoft Office for Mac OS X. And because Mac OS X runs Mac OS 9 applications in Classic mode, you can keep using your current software as well.
Fastest way to the Internet
See how fast the Mac gets students on the Internet . It's so easy to set up and use, you'll be online and researching on the web in 10 minutes or less using the 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port for broadband, or an optional AirPort Extreme* Card for working with the web wirelessly. The Internet Setup Assistant appears the first time your eMac is powered on, and automatically configures your system for your Internet service provider (ISP). All you need is an ethernet connection - the eMac comes complete with everything else.

With Mac OS X and with applications like iMovie, iDVD, iTunes and iPhoto, the eMac lets students create show-stopping digital media projects.
Mac OS X, Apple's powerful operating system, combines rock-solid reliability with legendary Macintosh ease-of-use. It's highly interactive and simple to learn, and makes it easier to access applications, files and the Internet and Mac OS X simplifies connecting to today's most popular FireWire and USB digital devices. And because the drivers for many popular digital cameras, DV camcorders and printers are built into Mac OS X, the operating system recognizes these devices as soon as you plug them into your new eMac.
Mac OS X features true multitasking, meaning that you can do more than one thing at a time. That's a good thing because, given the great digital applications the eMac comes with, chances are students are going to want to do everything at the same time.

Digital movies
Now even a walk in the park for a nature project can be made the subject of a movie. Apple's iMovie 2 digital video editing software turns the eMac into a movie studio that even beginning students can use. iMovie 2 works with today's most popular DV camcorders, letting your students transfer high-quality video and audio from the camcorder to the eMac through a FireWire cable. Once they import their footage (keeping only the scenes they like), they can arrange their clips in any order they like, and add effects like cross-dissolves, rolling credits and even their own soundtrack or voiceovers. Your students will be engaged in learning so they will learn at a much deeper level. The eMac comes prepared for just such contingencies with an ample 40GB hard disk.
Digital pictures
Students can import pictures from a digital camera, organise them, edit and improve them, and share them in a number of ways using iPhoto on their eMac. They can use iPhoto software to create a digital album, then select a theme and a layout they like. They can add titles and text to tell a story or describe their pictures - and even output their project as an actual book. If the eMac is connected to an inkjet printer, students can print their book pages and take them to the local copy center for binding. Or their parents can order a professionally bound book with just one click. What better way to keep a permanent record of a student's accomplishments?
Digital audio
iTunes 2 gives your students easy-to-use tools for organising and managing their entire digital audio collection. They can use the eMac and iTunes to play music, create playlists, and - if your school chooses the model with the Combo drive - burn custom CDs with drag-and-drop ease. iTunes lets students import tracks from a CD and turn favorite songs into digital audio files, storing them on the eMac's hard disk. What's more, your students can also import digital audio files of their own voices (or of plays, concerts or school events) into iTunes. iTunes includes a crossfader and a sound enhancer, and lets students optimise audio playback by selecting from more than 20 preset equaliser settings, or by manually customising the 10-band equaliser to create and save their favourite configurations. It's perfect for creating soundtracks for movies.
Digital distribution
The eMac with SuperDrive also includes Apple's iDVD 2 software. Apple's breakthrough DVD authoring application makes it easy to create and burn your own interactive DVDs - complete with full-motion menus - for playback on most consumer DVD players. iDVD 2 comes with a selection of professionally designed buttons and backgrounds, and you can also design your own menus, with up to six navigation buttons and backgrounds, using your own pictures and video clips. A single DVD disc can hold up to 90 minutes of high-quality video or thousands of still images, making this the ideal medium for distributing the movies, music, digital picture albums and iPhoto slideshows you create on your eMac. |

The eMac comes packed with features and attributes that could easily make the dean's list. Come to think of it, you might say it is the dean's list made manifest.
This is where you might expect us to say that when we designed the eMac, we started with a blank sheet of paper. The fact is that we didn't. We actually started the design process with a wish-list of desired features and attributes we put together after talking to scores of educators at schools and colleges around the country.
For example, you asked for a 17-inch screen - while making it clear that you didn't want to have to buy new desks to accommodate a physically bigger computer. By the same token, you liked the idea of having a supercomputer in the classroom. You wanted your students to have the benefit of a PowerPC G4 processor but, it had to be affordable. You also wished for a computer with a space-saving design - and you insisted on not having to go out and buy new peripherals for it. To this last point, the good news is that thanks to Mac OS X, the eMac works with most of your existing printers and scanners. You can also use your Mac OS 9 applications in Classic mode. (1)
We listened, we paid attention, and we learned. The eMac is the result. We addressed the concerns of educators right down to the tiniest detail. Take the placement of the serial number and Ethernet ID, for example. It may not be a big deal in the corporate world or in homes, but inventory management is an issue in schools and colleges. So to help schools manage inventory, the serial number and ethernet ID are conveniently located on the inside of the optical drive door. And, thanks to the all-in-one design, you have fewer asset management tags to keep track of.
It's true that the eMac's design aesthetics are distinctly Apple-like. But the inspiration for the eMac came from you.
